What is chin augmentation?
Chin augmentation with implants can enhance a person's chin or create symmetry or an aesthetically pleasing shape within the facial structure. Implants can also be used for reconstruction in cases involving birth defects or trauma-related incidents.
What are chin implants made from?
Chin implants are made primarily of a solid silicone material that is both a soft and firm. The implant is inserted through a small incision under your chin or inside of the mouth.
How is chin augmentation surgery performed?
The chin augmentation operation can usually be performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation in the office. There is a small incision placed under the chin where the implant is then placed. The procedure will take about two hours to perform. The other option is to have the chin augmentation performed at a surgery center under general anesthesia. Anesthesia options and what is recommended for you will be discussed on the day of your consultation.
What should I expect postoperatively?
- Temporary throbbing, aching, swelling, redness and numbness.
- Pressure dressings and bandages are applied.
- Some swelling and bruising may last 10-14 days.
- Some numbness may persist around the operative areas.
- Tenderness, tingling, and numbness could last up to 3-6 months.
When will the sutures be taken out, and does this hurt?
The sutures will be removed at one week after surgery. The removal itself should not be uncomfortable.
Will there be scarring?
There may be scarring. The degree of chin augmentation scarring depends on the incision technique used. If the incisions were made inside your mouth, the scars will not be visible. If external incisions were made, they should be hidden under the chin.
How much downtime is required for this procedure?
You can expect to resume regular activities in about one to two weeks, and can usually return back to work within a week.
When will I be able to see the results?
The results are immediate. At first you may think the implant is too big - due to the swelling, but give it time.
What are the risks of chin augmentation?
With any surgery you run the chance of infection, hematoma, seroma, numbness from nerve damage, implant shifting, and asymmetry. Some complications may require revision surgery.
How long does a chin implant last?
Indefinitely
